Our home landscapes can be beautiful, resilient, and animated. I believe in sustainable landscaping principles that conserve water and energy, create habitat, sequester carbon, and maintain a sense of place by remaining true to the surrounding environment.
Fire resilience, deer and drought are challenges that can be creatively used to design unique and attractive gardens. Some design solutions may include the use of plants that are not native to California, but starting with the concept of using natives where possible increases the biodiversity of insects, spiders, birds, and other native fauna.
Andrea Davis is the co-chair of the Sanhedrin Chapter of the CA Native Plant Society and a founding member of the Ukiah Valley Trail Group.
